Stopping at the two-story, gray block building on the corner of Hwy 29 and County T in the town of Poland, Wisconsin, you might think you’re looking at an old time country store. Built in the 1930’s, the building at various times was a grocery store, a post office, and a hardware store for the large rural area. Today, the Little General Gas Plus is a bustling convenience store inside a historic structure that also boasts four gas and diesel pumps.
Location really does count! And this intersection is well-traveled, with Hwy 29 running from the western side of the state, through Green Bay to Kewaunee on Lake Michigan’s shore; County Hwy T running south to Manitowoc County and north to Hwy 57 and Door County. Both directions bring local auto and farm traffic to the store, as well as ongoing tourist traffic headed to Packers games, the arts culture of Door County, or charter fishing on the lakeshore.
In 2016, the owners did a complete remodel to the fuel pumps, new updates for the electronics, and computer monitoring inside the building. Also at that time a new fuel contract was signed with US Oil. Other major suppliers to the store include, but are not limited to, Holiday Wholesale, Badger Liquor, and all of the local soda and beer distributors. The store has full lines of convenience foods and other pick-up items including health and beauty, phone cords and accessories, automotive items, and more. The business also has a Food License to sell small deli items. Filling propane tanks is also a steady source of income, along with added “cash flow” from a two-bedroom apartment on the top floor of the building and a three-bedroom apartment attached to the side.
